Mental Health Matters

Mental health is an essential part of our overall health, wellbeing, productivity and quality of life. It influences how we think, feel, relate to others, cope with challenges and function in our everyday lives.

Simply put, there is no health without mental health.

World Mental Health Day

World Mental Health Day, observed globally on 10th October, provides an important opportunity to raise awareness, encourage conversations about mental health and mobilize support for better access to mental healthcare.

While this global observance brings much-needed attention to mental health, awareness should not be limited to one day or one month.

Mental health conversations need to happen throughout the year.

Why Mental Health Awareness Matters

Despite increased conversations about mental health, many people still experience stigma, misinformation and fear of seeking professional support.

Greater awareness can help us:

  • Recognise mental health challenges earlier
  • Reduce stigma and discrimination
  • Encourage people to seek help
  • Promote healthier and more supportive communities
  • Improve understanding of available mental health services
  • Encourage compassion towards people experiencing mental health conditions

How Can We Promote Mental Health Awareness?

Talk openly about mental health Normalizing conversations about emotional and psychological wellbeing can make it easier for people to ask for help.

Use respectful language A person should never be defined by a diagnosis. Choosing compassionate, person-centred language helps reduce stigma.

Learn about mental health Reliable information helps us recognise warning signs, challenge misconceptions and understand when professional support may be necessary.

Listen without judgement Sometimes the first step towards seeking help is having someone who is willing to listen.

Use our platforms responsibly Workplaces, schools, families, faith communities, healthcare facilities and digital platforms can all help spread accurate mental health information.

Encourage early help-seeking People should not have to wait until they reach a crisis before accessing mental health support.

Recognising When Someone May Need Support

Everyone experiences difficult emotions from time to time. However, professional support may be helpful when changes in thoughts, emotions or behaviour become persistent, overwhelming or begin interfering with everyday life.

Signs may include:

  • Persistent sadness, anxiety or irritability
  • Significant changes in sleep or appetite
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Withdrawal from family, friends or activities
  • Difficulty coping with everyday responsibilities
  • Changes in behaviour or functioning
  • Increased alcohol or substance use
  • Feelings of hopelessness or worthlessness
  • Thoughts of self-harm or suicide

Early recognition and appropriate intervention can make a significant difference.

Mental Health Is Everyone’s Business

Creating mentally healthy communities requires collective effort. Individuals, families, employers, schools, healthcare professionals, faith leaders and communities all have a role to play.

At Chiromo Hospital Group, we remain committed to advancing mental health awareness, challenging stigma and encouraging individuals to seek appropriate professional support when they need it.

Mental health awareness should not end when World Mental Health Day is over. Every conversation matters, every day of the year.
