Gender-Based Violence and Mental Health

Gender-based violence (GBV) refers to violence directed at a person because of their sex or gender. It can affect anyone and may take different forms, including physical, sexual, emotional, psychological, verbal or economic abuse, as well as deprivation of opportunities and resources.

While women and girls are disproportionately affected, men and boys can also experience GBV, and many cases remain unreported because of fear, stigma or lack of access to appropriate support.

Risk Factors

GBV can occur across all socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds. Factors that may increase the risk include:

  • Exposure to violence or abuse during childhood
  • Substance misuse
  • Harmful gender norms and behaviours
  • Poor communication and conflict within relationships
  • Economic and social inequalities
  • Community attitudes that normalize or tolerate violence

Impact of Gender-Based Violence

GBV can have serious short- and long-term effects on a survivor’s physical, emotional and mental wellbeing. These may include:

  • Physical injuries
  • Sexual and reproductive health complications
  • Depression and anxiety
  • Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
  • Increased substance use
  • Social isolation and reduced self-esteem
  • Increased risk of self-harm or suicide

Children who witness or experience violence at home may also develop emotional and behavioural difficulties that can affect their wellbeing and relationships later in life.

Prevention and Support

Preventing GBV requires collective action from individuals, families, communities and institutions. Effective approaches include:

  • Providing safe and accessible psychosocial support for survivors
  • Encouraging early reporting and help-seeking
  • Promoting healthy communication and respectful relationships
  • Challenging harmful gender norms and attitudes
  • Strengthening social and economic empowerment
  • Increasing community awareness and education
