Understanding ADHD

Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental condition that can affect a person’s ability to manage attention, impulses, activity levels and everyday responsibilities.

ADHD usually begins in childhood, but symptoms can continue into adolescence and adulthood. It can affect learning, work, relationships and daily functioning.

Common Signs of ADHD

ADHD can present differently from one person to another. Symptoms generally involve inattention, hyperactivity and/or impulsivity.

Inattention

This may include:

  • Difficulty maintaining attention
  • Being easily distracted
  • Frequently losing or misplacing things
  • Difficulty following through on tasks
  • Forgetfulness
  • Difficulty organizing and managing time
  • Procrastination or difficulty starting tasks

Hyperactivity and Impulsivity

This may include:

  • Restlessness or difficulty sitting still
  • Feeling constantly “on the go”
  • Talking excessively
  • Difficulty waiting for one’s turn
  • Interrupting conversations or activities
  • Acting before considering the consequences

Not everyone with ADHD experiences all these symptoms, and the way ADHD presents may change with age.

ADHD Is More Than Difficulty Paying Attention

People with ADHD may sometimes be able to concentrate intensely on activities that are particularly interesting or stimulating while struggling to maintain attention on other tasks.

This is sometimes described as hyperfocus.

ADHD can also affect what are known as executive functions—skills involved in planning, organizing, managing time, regulating emotions and completing tasks.

Recognising Individual Strengths

Having ADHD does not define a person’s intelligence, abilities or potential.

Every individual has a different combination of strengths and challenges. Some people with ADHD may describe themselves as creative, energetic, spontaneous or able to approach problems from different perspectives.

The goal of treatment is not to change who someone is, but to help them understand how their brain works, manage areas of difficulty and build on their individual strengths.

When ADHD Becomes a Challenge

Without appropriate recognition and support, ADHD can affect:

  • Academic performance
  • Work and productivity
  • Relationships
  • Time management and organisation
  • Self-esteem
  • Emotional wellbeing
  • Decision-making and risk-taking

ADHD may also occur alongside other mental health or developmental conditions, making a comprehensive professional assessment important.

Assessment and Treatment

ADHD cannot be diagnosed simply because someone is distracted, energetic or forgetful.

Diagnosis requires a comprehensive assessment by an appropriately qualified healthcare professional, considering symptoms, developmental history and how these difficulties affect everyday functioning.

Depending on individual needs, management may include:

  • Psychological and behavioural interventions
  • Practical strategies for organisation and time management
  • Parent or family support
  • School or workplace accommodations
  • Medication when clinically appropriate
  • Support for co-occurring mental health conditions

With the right understanding, treatment and support, children and adults with ADHD can learn effectively, build successful relationships, thrive professionally and lead fulfilling lives.

At Chiromo Hospital Group, we provide professional assessment and individualized mental health support for children, adolescents and adults experiencing ADHD and other mental health or neurodevelopmental challenges.

ADHD may present challenges, but it does not define a person’s ability or potential.
